Obituary for Donald Oreste Cariati

Donald O. Cariati
May 28, 1961 – March 27, 2018

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear husband and father Don.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of eighteen years, Daniela and his children, Marco and Sienna. He also leaves behind his mother Andonetta, sisters Nina, (Steve), Josie (Thompson), brother John, nieces Stephanie and Alexa, father-in-law, Aldo Perrelli, sister in-laws Franca (Ercole), Olga (Camillo), Josie (Joe), brother-in-law Tony (Dawn), and nieces and nephews (Adela, Adam, Robert, Tanya, Aldo, Breanna and Delaine.

He was pre-deceased by his father Oreste Cariati, and mother-in-law Ida Perrelli.

Don was born in Capreol Ontario. Growing up he played baseball and hockey as a goalie. A highlight was winning the Midget Silver Stick tournament. He always loved sports. As a young student, he had summer employment with CN Railway as a track maintainer. In 1985, Don graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with a degree in Applied Science Civil Engineering.

That same year, Don began a long and successful career with CN Railway moving to Prince George, B.C. Don’s career with CN moved him to Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, Hornepayne Ontario, and back to Montreal. He held various positions in the engineering department, that included track construction, maintenance, and testing to ensure that trains operated safely and made sure that employee safety was a priority. He loved working on the railway and he excelled at it.

He started as a track labourer, and then continued on to his most recent position as a Senior Manager of Engineering.

He was transferred to Winnipeg, in 1996 where a year later, he would meet the love of his life Daniela. They were married in 1999 and in 2003, Don became a father to fraternal twins. He took pride in his family and spending time with them was his most favourite thing. His job took the family on many adventures, beginning with Edmonton, then onto Chicago and back to Winnipeg.

When you think of Don, he had so many great attributes. Don had a very strong work ethic, he was resourceful, witty, clever, gentle, strong and unbelievably humble.

He was also very encouraging of others and always took a genuine interest in people and really tried to get to know who they are and what their interests were.

He was analytical in the way he thought about things, always trying a different approach to see if he could beat the system, to do things better or to improve upon a method.

He had a playfully adversarial approach to humor - often using sound effects to embellish or intensify the moment.

You could always count on Don for a helping hand, or a suggestion that could help and his presence made every get together fun.

We will miss you and will carry you in our hearts always.

The family will receive condolences at 10:00 am followed by the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 11:00 am from Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., Rev. Father Sam Argenziano presiding.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to CancerCare Manitoba – Pancreatic Research fund, would be appreciated by the family.
