Obituary for Gaspare Trunzo

Gaspare Trunzo
April 30, 1931 – February 27, 2018

On Tuesday, February 27, Gaspare passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was born in San Mango d’aquino, a small village in Italy. He married the love of his life Sarafina, and shortly thereafter they were blessed with the birth of their first son, Francesco.

Life in post- world war Italy was difficult. Jobs close to home were scarce. Having to spend long periods away from his family to keep work, Gaspare sought a more stable future for his young family. Accordingly, with little money and large ambition they left Italy and immigrated to Winnipeg. Within a short period of time they were blessed with the birth of their second son Mario.

While Gaspare spent most of his working life, in Canada, employed at Federal Pioneer Electric, his true passion (outside of Sarafina) was gardening. His small back yard garden produced more tomatoes, hot peppers and cucumbers than most market farmers. He also harvested zucchini, beans and herbs, so much so that most of his family did very little vegetable shopping in the summer. A visit to Gaspare’s always resulted in one leaving well stocked with fresh vegetables. He showed off his garden with well-deserved pride and was more than happy to share the bounty.

Amongst his many talents was card playing. Many a Friday night was spent playing cards with family. Legend has it he remains undefeated.

Above all he loved his grandchildren, and just being around them brought a smile to his face.

Gaspare is survived by his wife of almost 60 years Sarafina, his son Francesco and his wife Maria (Cuda) and their children, Rino, Serafina and Stefano; his youngest son Mario, his brother Pasquale and his wife Concetta and their children Angela and Marco, and his nephews Giuseppe (Joe) and Pasquale Aiello and their families; two brothers in Italy, Mario and Giovanni and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank all the nurses, doctors and Staff at St. Boniface Hospital fifth floor Cardiac Care Unit for making Gaspare’s last hours comfortable and most importantly for the empathy and attention they displayed throughout.

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. Condolences will be graciously accepted at 10:00 am and Mass will follow at 11:00 am, Rev. Father Sam Argenziano presiding. Entombment will follow at Holy Angel Mausoleum, Green Acres Memorial Gardens, #1 Highway E. at Navin Rd.
