Manuela was a farmer and housewife in the Philippines before immigrating to Canada in 1980, to help her daughter, Erlinda, raise her young family. She did not only care for her own grandchildren but also extended family, friends and neighbors. Her love of caring & nurturing was also expressed in her passion for gardening where she spent the spring preparing seedlings, tending to the garden during the summer and harvesting in the fall. The fruits of her garden were shared among many family, friends and neighbors.

She will be lovingly remembered by her family as a strong, determined and courageous woman who moved to the other side of the world, adapted to foreign country without speaking the language or knowing the culture to help her daughter. A simple, kind and generous woman who instilled values of love of family and hard work in her grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the homecare workers who kept Manuela comfortable in her daughter’s home and the SICU team at the Health Science Centre; their empathy and compassion will never be forgotten.
