Obituary for Gregori Olynyk

Print
George was born May 12, 1938 in Kharkov Ukraine to Ivan and Edowkia Olynyk. When George was a teenager they moved to Belgium during the second world war. When George was about 22, the three of them immigrated to Canada in 1960 when they built their family home on Avalon road in St.Vital.
Being a truck driver for most of his life, George could be found on any day in the garage with any number of his sons and their friends fixing classic cars, bleeding breaks, tearing apart carburetors and wheeling and dealing with neighbours trying to buy their cars. He often went picking through the local car scrap yards for parts. Growing up all his kids got a car or two from dad, there was no shortage to go around.
Later in life George started to have some health issues and after a few years of struggling on his own he moved into Beacon Hill Lodge where he spent his final days. Dad always knew who his kids were and enjoyed visits from friends.
Anyone who knew George knew he could be difficult at times and rather stubborn, but he was always the first to help friends when they needed, often taking on small renovation projects and of course fixing cars.
George had suffered a few strokes and developed dementia and had kidney failure. George passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 14th 2017 at
Beacon Hill Lodge. Thank you to all the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge for their care, support and understanding.
Survived by his four sons , Harold, Gregory, Jackie, Jimmy, he was predeceased by his parents Ivan Olynyk and Ewdokia Olynyk.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s society of Manitoba.
You are invited to a Celebration of Life at Jimmy’s residence, 1011 Nairn Avenue on Friday May 26, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM
